Santiago was founded over four centuries ago, by Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia. Its history, however, goes back to the days when small indigenous communities chose this fertile valley as a place to settle, attracted by its mild climate and rich natural resources. Today it is a modern city -with a population of almost eight million. It has been ranked by British magazine “Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU)” as the second best city to live in Latin America, according to international scales in education, culture, and environment.

Santiago is the capital of Chile, and it belongs to the Metropolitan District (Región Metropolitana). The Santiago Mandarin Hotel, where the GEDC 2019 will take place, is located bordering two main city towns: Las Condes and Vitacura.
